Earthquakes are caused by the sudden release of stress along tectonic plates, which sends out seismic waves. These waves cause buildings to vibrate, and horizontal movements can be particularly problematic. Consequences can include cracks in walls, burst pipes and falling fixtures. Eurocode 8 (EN 1998) sets out requirements to ensure the seismic safety of both load-bearing and non-load-bearing components in order to prevent such damage. Secure fastenings are crucial for pipework to withstand horizontal loads. Flexible, vibration-damping, firmly anchored supports are particularly important here.
